Detroit Lions: The punching bag of the NFC
An interesting fact for the Detroit Tigers is that since the year 2000, they have yet to have a .500 season. The most games in a season since their 9-7 season in 2000 came last year when they won 7 games to finish the year at 7-9. One might wonder if they should change their name to the Pussycat Dolls. The 2007 season left them with a dismal -98 Net points total. That is worst than pathetic.
So, what does 2008 hold for them? That is simple. Even though they did improve on the 2006 season of 3-13 2006 record last year, I do not see an upside swing this year. And what is worse is their key goal for 2008 is to “improve on the running gasme”. OK, let’s take a look here. Tatum Bell is a decent back, but in my opinion he can not pick this team up and carry them on his back. Not going to happen. And where do you look after that? Aveion Cason who was a return man primarily last yet or Artose Pinner who came back to the Lions via Atlanta in 2007 where at best he was a back up that played in a total of 7 games? Bottom line is if you can not compliment your starter, then what happens when he comes out.
Jon Kitna looks to be the signal caller again and I am not bad with that. As a fantasy owner, he put up some good numbers and scored a ton of points. having receivers to throw to helps. Having aground game does too. Calvin Johnson should have a big year this year. In just his second year from Georgia Tech, I expect big things from him. Roy Williams will give you all he has and then some and between him and Johnson, they can carry most the offense with the help of Kitna.
As for the defense, it is one that needs to be retooled and worked over. I really can not say anything good out of this squad yet as they have yet to show me anything good. To be outscored by 98 points means someone somewhere is not doing their job and I am sorry to say it but it is not just one guy. It is a group of 11 men called the defense. And frankly, they stink as a whole. Revamp it, rebuild it, retool it, do what ever you want to call it, but it needs and overhaul and it needs it now if you want any chance of the playoffs in this first decade of 2000.
And oh, just so you know, Lions end the season 6-10 as another disappointing year comes to an end.
