When the Saints come Marching in
This has been a team that has seen it share of “punching bag” seasons. The 2007 New Orleans Saint’s season was not as bad as some, but after 2006 when the saints went 10-6 and into the playoffs, a 7-9 might as well be a complete flip flop. What is bad is that everyone thought that the outstanding receiver Marques Colston would have a great year to follow up his 2006 season. Problem is, everyone was keying on him.
With that said, the problems did not end there. The Saints only saw 3 games out of work
horse Deuce McAllister. This put a lot of pressure on young Reggie Bush and I do not believe that he was ready for it. With their two seperate running styles, they are able to compliment each other, however, if one goes down it is like breaking a leg.
I think that both of those kinks in the armor have been repaired and I can see Drew Brees salivating. I can also see head coach Sean Payton salivating as well as he will have the luxury of having a quality back up QB in the form of Mark Brunell on the sidelines. This is great for those back flare ups that Drew sometimes encounters. With that said, the biggest off season acquisition might be that of tight end Jeremy Shockey. This guy is a monster over the middle and will fill a void. He is an animal that brings a style of play with him that fires people up.
Mike McKenzie will be wrecking havoc in the secondary again this year as it looks like Scott Fujita will lead the attack from close. This is not a team that has a lot of wholes on their defense. They had a -9 Net point differential for the 2007 season. That is impressive when you lose 9 games. These guys can play with the best of them.
To bring it to a close, I will say this. New Orleans regains some luster and finds their way back to the playoffs via an 11-5 record.

This team has some major weapons and is a definite contender for the playoffs in my opinion. Shockey is a great addition. If McAllister and Bush stay healthy, the ground game will be top notch. Colston, while a good receiver cannot do it alone and that is where I think the weakness of the Saints is.
Rich, I think that the addition of Shockey frees up a very talented Colston to do what he needs to do.
